SP4377 tileset for stairs € 399.00

This is a beautiful set of five elongated ceramic tiles originally designed for use on staircases. They were typically installed in the riser of each step. Dating to the Baroque period, circa 1750, these tiles were commonly featured in palaces and important public buildings throughout the Valencia region of Spain. The decoration is entirely hand-painted, showcasing vibrant colors. The central motif features a blue-gray mask (or grotesque face)flanked by lush foliage, scrolls, and floral elements. This central design is anchored on both ends by a reclining lion figure, painted in a rich orange-yellow. The overall design exhibits a strong, symmetrical Baroque sensibility. These tiles are considered very rare. They are in reasonable condition despite showing significant damage, including a major break in the central tile featuring the face. The two outermost tiles depicting the lions have been cut, a modification likely made to adjust the tile row to the precise width of the original staircase.-
