PO2719 16 tile four-lobed pattern SOLD

The four-lobed pattern was widely used in Portugal between the second quarter and the end of the 17th century. At the end only in the blue and white color variant. one of the centers consists of four acanthus leaves, the other of a cross-shaped flower around which plant motifs and volutes are depicted. This pattern is very noticeable when you look at it from a distance, especially when it is applied filling large spaces, such as the churches of Portugal and Brazil. The multi-colored pattern can be found in churches in Obidos and Caldas da Rheina, Portugal. The blue variant is less common, and only the cladding of the "Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres" church in Montes Guararapes, near Recife in Brazil is known, see the last image. Some chips to corners and sides and some imperfections in the glaze.
