Medieval floor tile from Artois region, France.

A coat of arms depicting three French lilies in a diagonal shield, surrounded by leaves of the acanthus. This coat of arms is equivalent to the weapon of modern France introduced by Charles VI. (1380-1422) However, this tile is earlier, examples are located in Andres, and La Chapelle, with interiors from 1350. The County of Artois originated in 1237 had a coat of arms with a plurality of French lilies along with a representation of three castles from Castile, owned by the Counts of Artois. After 1315, the number of lilies in the coat of arms has been reduced to three accompanied by three castles. This may have inspired the tile makers to display only part of the coat of arms, it is easier to make and looks beautiful from a distance. Good condition tile, larger chip to bottom left corner, as well as a larger scratch to glaze of bottom left corner. several other smaller chips to sides. Surface with some traces of origional glaze.
