Tin glazed floor tile depicting the coat of arms of the Montesquieu family. This tile is made in Nevers, France, around 1650. An important member of this family is the French philosopher Charles Montesquieu (1689-1755). Spiritual father of the trias politica. In his book "De l'esprit des lois" from 1748 he weighed various state systems against each other. the American constitution of 1789 and the French constitution of 1791 are largely based on the ideas of Montesquieu. I do not know the provenance of this tile, but it might be from the Family castle: The Château de La Brède. You can see that the tile has been walked over for a long time, there is some damage to al four sides, and also to glaze of bottom left corner.
