Large size late medieval floor tile. Depicted are four shields with the fleur-de-Lys of France, surrounded by semi-arches that could represent a horn. The size as well as the decoration of these tiles suggests Champagne-Ardenne as a region of origin, where floor tiles of this size have been used in several church buildings. It is typical that on comparable specimens in different churches the shields point inwards, but otherwise all decor elements in our tiles are the same! This could indicate the use of a single wooden stamp that was used four times to apply the decor in the still plastic clay! In the parish church (église paroissiale) of Saint-Gengoul (Yonne) a smaller size tile has been used on which a similar shield with horns is depicted only once. The production date of our tiles is probably 2nd quarter of the 16th century, when a floor of this type of tile was placed at the church of Saint-Nicolas in Troyes. This tile has probably been situated on the edge of the floor area, because the surface glaze and patina is flawless. A corner has been cut, this happened a long time ago, possibly during the installation. The tile has a small firing crack.
