AN4430 Wessel waterlily 5 tilerun € 500

This tilerun of 5 tiles is an exceptional example of Art Nouveau ceramic art, manufactured by Wessel's Wandplattenfabrik in Bonn, Germany, around 1900. This runof tiles originated from a piece of furniture, as such tiles were frequently incorporated into the woodwork of cabinets or mantelpieces. The condition of the tile frieze is considered very good to excellent. The decor presents a lavish, continuous motif of water lilies (Nymphaea), which is highly characteristic of the German Jugendstil style and its focus on natural inspiration. The pattern is executed in relief, a result of the dust-pressed technique which ensured sharp details and pattern consistency across the multiple tiles. The colour scheme is both natural and stylized, featuring a soft, grey-green background glaze that evokes a misty or watery atmosphere. The large, open water lily blossoms are a bright yellow with striking white accents, creating a beautiful contrast. The entire design is interlaced with sweeping, deep green lily pads and dark burgundy-red stems and buds, resulting in a visually rich and rhythmic pattern. The seamless transition of the design from one tile to the next, often featuring mirrored central elements, makes this a highly sought-after and authentic piece of German Art Nouveau ceramic work.
