A striking original German Jugendstil / Art Nouveau tile by Wessel, Bonn, dating to approximately c.1900–1910. The tile features a highly stylised and strongly symmetrical botanical composition. Large sweeping foliate forms rise from the lower section and surround two prominent spiral motifs, while geometric leaf- or bud-shaped elements form an elaborate crown across the upper half. The design has a distinctly Secessionist character, combining natural forms with the strong symmetry and abstraction typical of progressive Continental design around 1900. The restrained colour palette is particularly effective, combining deep olive green, soft celadon green, ivory and warm cream. Variations in glaze thickness emphasize the relief and give the design considerable depth. The decoration is dust-pressed and relief moulded. Rather than using separately applied tubelining, the contours were formed directly in the ceramic body during pressing and subsequently glazed. The resulting raised pale outlines create a crisp, almost graphic effect. Condition: Good antique condition with expected signs of age and previous architectural use. There is fine glaze crazing throughout, particularly visible in the cream and pale-green areas.
