This is a beautiful example of an Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) tile designed by Henry van de Velde for Villeroy & Boch Mettlach, dating from the turn of the 20th century. Henry Van de Velde (Antwerp, April 3, 1863 – Zurich, October 15, 1957) was a Belgian painter, designer, and architect. The tile features a square format and is finished in a glossy, off-white glaze. A distinctive characteristic of the piece is the widespread, fine cracking of the glaze, known as craquelure, which is typical of antique tiles of this period.tile is in good condtion but there are some small glaze chips to sides.
