This refined Art Nouveau tile was produced by Utzschneider & Cie in Sarreguemines and dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. The decoration features elegantly modelled pansy blossoms in deep violet, soft grey and warm yellow, set against a gently mottled celadon-green ground. Flowing stems, stylised leaves and scattered star-shaped motifs create a dynamic yet balanced composition, characteristic of the naturalistic aesthetic of the Art Nouveau period. The decoration is executed in subtly raised relief with softly blended glazes, giving the surface depth and a painterly quality. Fine craquelure in the glaze adds to the tile’s period character.
