AN5181 MInton Hollins tile € 99.00

A beautiful original Art Nouveau tile by Minton, Hollins & Co., Stoke-on-Trent, England, dating to approximately c.1900–1910. The tile features a highly stylised and symmetrical floral design with a row of soft pink tulip-like flowers above a bold central red panel. Deep teal-green stems curve around the central motif to form an almost heraldic or shield-like composition. The combination of botanical forms and strong geometric symmetry is characteristic of the transition from Arts & Crafts to Art Nouveau / Secessionist design around the turn of the 20th century. The decoration is dust-pressed and relief moulded. The outlines and different levels of the design were formed directly in the tile body during manufacture and subsequently filled with coloured glazes, producing crisp divisions between the pink, red, teal-green and creamy-white areas. The reverse is especially interesting and clearly identifies the manufacturer. The extensive impressed lettering reads MINTON HOLLINS & CO. LTD / STOKE ON TRENT / ENGLAND across the characteristic grid-patterned reverse. Very good antique condition with expected age-related wear. There is light fine glaze crazing, particularly visible in the pale background and coloured decoration. A few tiny glaze nicks and minor surface marks are present.
