A spectacular original Art Nouveau / Jugendstil tile by De Dyle, Wijgmaal, Belgium, dating to approximately c.1900–1910. The tile features an exceptionally decorative peacock with its magnificent tail fully displayed. The bird is rendered in rich cobalt blue, while the enormous fan of feathers is glazed in turquoise and green with numerous dark blue “eye” markings. The design is surrounded by a warm ivory / cream background. The decoration is dust-pressed and relief moulded. The extraordinarily detailed plumage has been formed directly in the ceramic body, with fine raised and incised lines defining the individual feathers. Carefully applied coloured glazes then emphasize the relief, producing an almost luminous effect. Condition: Good antique condition with expected signs of age and use. There is extensive fine glaze crazing throughout, particularly visible across the cream background and turquoise-green plumage. Minor edge and corner wear.
